For the last 20+ years or so Slipknot has been one of those bands that can truly get your blood pumping. Over the years it has been awesome to see they have matured their sound and elevated their style. I went to see Slipknot live at Barclays Center in Brooklyn in May 2022. They are far from the red jumpsuit days in more ways than one. I got some last-minute tickets from StubHub to a show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The crowd at the show was very much in my age range. Late 30’s to fifty. It was very interesting to see how we all have aged over the last 20 years. My first slipknot show was at Ozzfest way back in 2001. Back then the crowd was all young rebellious kids. Elephant leg pants, black nail polish, and chains. Most importantly fresh faces. At this show, we all were a bit different, A bit more mature, and a bit wider. However, the excitement to see an awesome blood-pumping show was exactly the same. Don’t get me wrong there were a few Gen Y’s in the crowd as well. However, the bulk of the crowd was us Gen X’ers.
I heard about the show from a pretty cool app called Bandsintown. Bandsinntown is a pretty cool app that scans your phone for artists. It will then send you alerts when there’s a concert in town. I was a bit low on cash at the time. So, I used my trusty Earnin app to borrow money until payday. I was then able to get some last-minute tickets on Stubhub to see the show!
I got to the Barclays Center just in time for Slipknot to hit the stage. They had a large curtain that said “Slipknot” covering the entire stage. Then it started. They opened with the song “Sic”. The crowd immediately came alive. For the next 90 minutes, Slipknot did not fail to put on an excellent show. Of course, they played all of the hits over the last 20 years. The show was laced with talking interludes from the lead singer Corey Taylor.
The stage setup was pretty cool as well. There were two levels. The DJ and percussion drummers seemed like they were almost suspended on the second level. I was able to see they were set up on sort of a wide catwalk. The garbage can drums moved in almost an animated fashion. The guitarist, Bass, and singer were primarily on the lower level. Much like most big arena shows these days, there were big screens on the stage to capture all of the action for us in the nose bleeds. That being said I must say the construction of the Barclays Center allows for great viewing no matter where you are in the arena.
