The Spirit of Metal – Vodun

Vodun has been one of the most powerfully majestical bands I have heard in a long time. With strong gospel vocals and a heavy tribal sound. Vodun has definitely been at the top of my playlist and should be a part of yours!

Vodun is a band that celebrates the powers of voodoo spirituality with a heavy sound and an even stronger voice. They are based out of the UK.  This trio plays a lucid brand of thrash metal spiked with tribal drums and a soulful lead vocalist.  They’re primarily inspired by West African voodoo. The first time I heard vodun was as a suggested video on youtube. Their sound reminds me of Soulfly and Pantera mixed with Skunk Anansie. Which is another strong band with a powerful vocalist.

Vodun consists of Chantal Brown known as Oya on lead vocals, Sobo on drums, and Marassa on guitar. Remarkably Vodun lacks a bass player. Marassa and sabo obviously do not need this component to create a full sound. However, I have seen a few videos where they incorporate a baritone sax and a percussionist.

The enchanting siren Oya’s vocals definitely bring home the spirituality and magnetic light of this sound. Her voice can only be described as amazing! She brings strong energy and can definitely hit the notes that bring this band to life. You can hear the gospel roots in her voice as she shares her own brand of worship with the audience

The energy I get from this band always brings me into this heavy spiritual plane. their inspiration stems from African Vodou. When commenting on the influence that voodoo has on their overall style they said, “It’s about taking on the spirits we embody, that warrior element, and helping us to be truly in the moment.” Voodun’s music does just that.

Oya explains that she “came from a gospel background” and describes her performance as like being possessed its like catching the holy ghost or speaking in tongues. The live experience of this band is also enhanced by the  African-inspired robes which Oya  makes herself. She definitely exudes true goddess vibes with her presence.

If you’re into a heavy brand of rock with a spiritual vibe. Vodun must be a part of your playlist. If you want to hear more of Vodun I would suggest having a listen to “Spirits Past”, off of the ascent album. When you listen to this song you can hear their unique brand of hard rock and the tribal influence. It’s like you can hear Oya chanting toward the end of the song. If you are into hearing dynamic soulful vocals, you have to check out Mawu from the possession album
